Graphics chipmaker Nvidia said it will launch a program designed to bring PCs up to spec so systems can better handle virtual reality.

Nvidia, which counts gamers as a key influencer market, said it will partner with PC makers and add-on card suppliers to deliver so-called "VR Ready" systems. The aim is to use the VR Ready tagline as a way to indicate that a PC has the processing power for virtual reality (VR).

One of the large hurdles for virtual reality is that many PCs in the field today don't have the graphics horsepower for the latest technologies. Under the VR Ready program, Nvidia will create GeForce GTX VR Ready systems with PCs makers and include a line of add-on cards. The move is similar to what Intel did to establish itself as a key ingredient brand.

VR requires graphics processors that can deliver frame rates above 90 frames per second for two simultaneous images each targeted at an eye.

PC makers participating in the VR Ready program include Acer, Alienware, Asus, HP, MSI as well as retailers Amazon and Newegg.VR Ready systems will include GeForce GTX 970, GTX 980, GTX 980 Ti and TITAN X and follow recommended specs from Nvidia.
